Haha...it's been so long since I heard the original expression.
I've lived in the US for a very long time/have an American spouse and 2 kids but can't vote because I won't denounce the motherland (Canada, eh?).
I go to rallies, write emails, give (paltry amounts) of money to the party of the candidate I support...there are lots of ways to support an American candidate but not vote.
